Robert Ward leads the Geo-economics, Geopolitics and Strategy research programme and is the IISS Japan Chair, carrying out independent research and writing extensively on strategic issues related to Japan, including its contemporary security and foreign policies.
Prior to joining the IISS, Robert was editorial director at The Economist Intelligence Unit. In this capacity, he led the EIU’s country and industry analysis and forecasting teams. He was also a member of the EIU’s executive committee. Robert lived and worked in Japan from 1989 to 1996, latterly holding a position in Japan’s largest credit-rating agency, The Japan Bond Research Institute. Robert holds bachelor's and master's degrees from Cambridge University.

Oliver Bisazza is Director General, Industrial Policies at MedTech Europe, the European trade association for the medical technology industry including diagnostics, medical devices and digital health. MedTech Europe’s Industrial Policies team, which Oliver leads, supports the industry’s compliance with new and changing EU regulatory requirements, including the Medical Devices Regulation (MDR). His team strives to facilitate technical implementation of these requirements, and to communicate his members’ positions to the European Commission, the EU Member States, and other relevant authorities and stakeholders.
Oliver has been with the organization since 2017, prior to which is had a variety of company and trade association roles. He is proud to call himself an ex-employee of EDANA, where he served as Regulatory Affairs Manager through 2009-2013.
Born and raised in Australia, Oliver is a dual national of Australia and Malt, and a native speaker of English.

Since 2011, Thorsten Bock is responsible for technical support of continuous ultrasonic bonding applications at Herrmann Ultraschalltechnik. In his role as Key Account Manager, his focus goes beyond the support of customers. He provides technical consultancy and elaboration for optimum and innovative process solutions. As an experienced specialist for the processing of rolled materials made of woven and nonwoven origin, he supports from first contact, through consultation, arrangement of trials in the technical lab, the integration support up to the installation and optimization of the ultrasonic units.

Christel Dendas is a global leader with 30 years of experience in strategy and business management. She currently works as Sustainability Practice Lead at Kinetic Consulting. Prior to that, she worked as CCO and BU President at Jacob Holm. Her area of expertise is bringing new technologies to market and leading business transformation. In the last 3 years, she has built on this to expand her skills in the field of ESG strategy. In April 2022, she completed a certification on circular economy and sustainability strategies at Cambridge University. Christel holds an MBA from ESCP in Paris and a master's degree in physics and engineering from the Polytechnic School of Louvain in Belgium.

Colin Alexander Hanna is Director of Market Research for Price Hanna Consultants. Mr. Hanna brings research and analytical techniques developed from his MBA (University of Washington) and MSS (Master in Social Services – Bryn Mawr College) degrees combined with strategic insight and perspective gained from professional experience spanning multiple industries.
Prior to joining Price Hanna Consultants in 2017, Mr. Hanna worked as an individual consultant for clients in the energy, global health, social services and consumer goods industries. Susan Iliefski-Janols, VP Sustainability Products & Services, is responsible for sustainability for brands, products, services and innovations globally for Essity Hygiene and Health categories. Ilka Kaczmarek specialized in strategy and innovation management in her double Master's degree at the Universities of Augsburg and Rennes. After working for several years as an innovation and product manager she joined Kelheim Fibres as Innovation Manager in May 2020. The New Business Development team she is part of further strengthens the innovation focus of Kelheim Fibres in Open Innovation approaches allowing for close exchanges with players along the value chain and joint developments. Central to her work is the identification of innovation potentials and the opening up of new application fields, as well as the development of strategic collaborations in the field of fibre technologies and related markets.

From 1997 till 2003 I was studying Neurobiology and specialized on the Retina. The reason why I chose the University of Oldenburg was a special research program for Neurocognition. I graduated with my Diploma in 2003. From there on I did my PhD at the Max-Planck-Institue of Biophysics under Prof. Dr. Ernst Bamberg. The title of my thesis was „Functional Expression of Channelrhodopsin 2 (ChR2) in the methylotrophic yeast Pichia pastoris and biophysical Characterization“.
After finishing my PhD in 2007 I decided to start a career as Regulatory/Scientific Manager in the Industry and started working for Procter & Gamble, one of the biggest consumer goods companies in the world. Here I quickly developed all necessary skills needed as Regulatory/Scientific Manager and Project Leader in the food sector, where I specifically was the expert in the field of food allergy management and process contaminants such as acrylamide and 3-MCPD esters.
In addition to my expertise as Regulatory Manager, I lead several projects from Process to Marketing. In my current role as Senior Scientist in Baby Care, I am responsible for Human Safety (Toxicology), Project Management and Risk Management, as well as strategy development and external influencing. My role is the crucial link between process, R&D and external partners. I lead and support upstream and downstream projects on an end-to-end basis. One of my special expertise lies with the development of new Pigment and Dye applications, where I closely engage with suppliers and the formula design department, to ensure fast but compliant project delivery to the market. My strong leadership and communication skills greatly help in successfully delivering all business needs.
Further I am an expert in the field of recycled packaging material safety and its implication for product exposure for cosmetics.
Next to my work at P&G I am the Chair of the Cosmetics Europe Expert team on Children’s Risk assessment (ET Vulnerable Population) and Vice Chair of the ET Exposure. I have been the Chair of the Cosmetics Europe Preservative task forces, such as the Phenoxyethanol Consortium, as well as the toxicological leader of the ET Product Preservation.
Taryn will make a presentation about the EDANA Stewardship Programme with Marines Lagemaat.
Marines Lagemaat is the Scientific and Technical Affairs Director for EDANA, the international Association representing the nonwoven and related industries, a position he has held since September 2014.
Based in Brussels, Marines is responsible for managing the internal and external activities related to scientific and technical affairs in order to support the nonwoven industry, in all its applications: personal and household hygiene, medical protection, filtration, automotive, and construction. In this role he’s involved in the development and implementation of standards and their related test methods that serve as a reference for the industry and for fair trade. In addition, Marines manages various training and education programmes designed to provide technical and application-oriented support. Marines is of Dutch nationality.

Dr. Raquel Roussel Garcia has more than 12 years of experience on the field of research and development. She managed for more than 10 years variety of international projects at Fraunhofer Institute, always focused on the development and characterization of materials. Since 2018 she is responsible for the NONWOVENS application development team at Herrmann Ultraschalltechnik. The team initiates development projects and gives support and advise there where a challenge is identified related to ultrasonic welding. Her passion for science is driven by her curiosity and the intention to make a positive impact on our society.

As Senior Manager at GALAB Laboratories, Carsten Saal receives more than 15 years of experience in the field of Consumer Product Testing. This includes the development of testing plans and evaluation of test results for different product categories, toys, cosmetic products and all kinds of Food Contact Materials (FCM). In addition to providing advice he also conducts trainings workshops.
As part of the development of the new EDANA NWSP Methods, he is involved in the analytical implementation of the methods.

Dr. Schmid-Schlager finished her studies in Technical Chemistry and Industrial Engineering at the Johannes Kepler University in Linz. For the diploma thesis within Technical Chemistry she focused on Physical Chemistry and accomplished her studies on Organic Schottky Diodes under the supervision of Prof. Niyazi Serdar Sariciftci at the Linz Institute of Organic Solar Cells (LIOS). After that, she started her PhD under the supervision of Prof. Sariciftci in the field of biocatalytic and bio-electrocatalytic CO2 reduction using microorganisms and enzymes and finished moreover her second diploma thesis in Industrial Engineering in the topic of CO2 reduction at semiconductor electrolyte interfaces. After one year as a postdoctoral assistant she joined in January 2017 the group of Nonwovens & Technical Products of the Research & Development Department of Lenzing AG. In her research, she focuses on the investigation of biological degradation of cellulosic products, the chemical and mechanical aftertreatment of cellulosic fibers and design of new, safe hygiene and technical products.

Lori Shaffer is the vice president of Global Nonwovens at Kimberly-Clark. In her role, she leads a global business that develops and manufactures the advanced materials that enable trusted brands such as Huggies®, Kotex®, and Depend® to deliver better care for people at every stage of their lives with the smallest environmental footprint.
An engineer who holds three patents for materials fabrication and design, Shaffer leads a team of PhDs, scientists, engineers, and lean manufacturing experts who work on the leading edge of science and materials innovation. She has a proven track record of identifying growth opportunities for Kimberly-Clark’s personal care and Kimberly-Clark Professional businesses, and in driving technical breakthroughs in skin health, sustainability, and lightweight comfort materials.
A 20-year veteran of the CPG industry, Shaffer started her career at Kimberly-Clark as a mechanical engineer working at the company’s diaper manufacturing facility in Wisconsin. She subsequently joined Kimberly-Clark Professional in Roswell, GA, where she held management roles in research, product development and marketing, and launched first-of-a-kind products and services.
Gil Stevens is the External Relations and Sustainability Director for EDANA, the international Association representing the nonwoven and related industries, a position he has held since March 2018.
With a Master’s Degree in Product Development and in Environmental Science, Gil started his career as product engineer in the building industry. Pursuing his passion for sustainability, Gil joined the Cradle to Cradle Platform in 2012, where he has been guiding companies in different sectors, such as textiles, cleaning agents, building, office equipment towards the integration of C2C and preparing them for a circular economy. As sustainability coach at Sustenuto, Gil supported organisations in developing and implementing a sustainability strategy. At the beverage group Spadel, Gil’s responsibilities included the coordination of local CSR representatives at the various European sites and external CSR communication. During his career, Gil also concluded an Executive MBA programme at the Antwerp Management School.
Gil currently has responsibility for managing sustainability and maintaining external relations for EDANA.
My current focus is enabling manufacturers and brand owners of absorbent hygiene products to incorporate digital features into these, such as e.g. wetness measurement, position monitoring etc. The upgrade to smart diapers is possible today thanks to the printed electronic sensing technology from Henkel in combination with customized software and hardware offered by IoT partners. My role is setting up the relevant digital eco-systems at the disposal of the brand-owner. Thanks to my 20+ years experience in the hygiene industry I have gained the trust of the key stakeholders for this type of innovation projects.
Michel will make a presentation on "Improving the lives of patients and caregivers with smart adult care solutions"
Bart, Master in Chemical Engineering and Cosmetic Safety Assessor. He is one of these exceptions, who still works for the company he started his career with almost 25 years ago.
Back in his early days at Ontex, he was responsible for Quality Management and since 2009, Bart is leading the department he started, focussing on sustainability, product safety, regulatory and business relations. Multiple projects were launched and a global view was created in relation to Sustainability and Product Stewardship.
He represents Ontex within multiple Steerco’s and different Working Groups within Edana and additionally he is a member of the Board of the American Industry Association BAHP.
In his free time, he is acting as a Municipal Councillor in his hometown and is an active runner and cyclist.
