Why use nonwovens in filtration?

Nonwovens can be engineered very precisely to meet exact specifications and stringent regulatory requirements for air filtration and liquid filtration.

They are ideal in filtration applications where strength of extremely high temperatures is required but other advantages include, ease of strikethrough, increased efficiency, reduced energy cost, and longer service life.

One of the fastest growing segments, nonwovens have evolved from simply replacing other forms of media, such as paper, cloth, glass and carbon to becoming the media of choice for filtration, including the wide adoption of nanofiber layers and the use of sophisticated hybrid filter media.

The different uses are:

Air filtration

  •  HVAC - industrial heating, ventilation and air conditioning
  •  Industrial
  • Consumer Products (vacuum cleaners, cooker hoods, PCs, etc.)
  • Clean Rooms

Liquid filtration

  • Food & Beverage (milk, wine, tea etc.)
  • Pharmaceutical/Medical
  • Water
  • Blood
  • Hydraulic

Automotive filtration

  • Engine air
  • Oil
  • Fuel
  • Cabin air

Speciality filtration

  • Antimicrobial
  • Biopharmaceutical
  • Dust
  • Odour

The advantages of using nonwovens in filtration

  • Removal of a wide range of contaminants from water (bacteria, viruses, metals, minerals etc.)
  • Uniform structure
  • Tear- and puncture-resistance
  • Chemical resistance
  • High retention capacities
  • High air permeability
  • Excellent abrasion resistance
  • Flame retardancy
  • Absorption of fats and oils
  • High level of flow capacity
  • High tensile strength

Water, water everywhere
The United Nations will observe World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought on June 17th, explaining that ‘desertification’ does not refer to the expansion of existing deserts but to the degradation of land in arid, semi-arid and dry sub-humid areas, caused primarily by human activities and climatic variations.

Brothers in arms for fine filtration
Nonwovens and membranes are considered to be very separate products which in fact, in many filtration applications, are highly interconnected. Nonwovens media-based filtration processes are not generally considered absolute methods of purification, since particles of the size of one micron or less can pass through them into the filtrate. Firing on all cylinders
Nonwovens filter media are becoming more sophisticated all the time, with the result that they are finding an ever-increasing range of end-uses – and even replacing heavier woven oil-coated fabrics in US Army helicopter engines.

Cleaner air - outside and in
Concern over the air quality inside buildings is now receiving similar attention to that which outdoor air quality received in the 1970s – and it’s another area in which nonwovens-based filter media are cleaning up.
