The FILTREX™ Innovation Award competition is organised within the framework of the FILTREX™ conference and is part of EDANA's broader effort to support and celebrate innovation within the nonwoven and related industry.
This reward recognizes the efforts of all manufacturers of nonwoven based filtration products/elements and celebrate their continuous efforts for excellence.

Dr.-Ing. Frank Möbius is a mechanical engineer and a former BMW manager with more than 25 years of experience in various leading functions such as R&D and industrialization of components for the electrification of passenger cars. At the end of his BMW career, he was responsible for Technology Scouting and Forecasting as part of Open Innovation in BMW's research division. One of his tech scouting projects dealt with bio-based, biodegradable textiles for vehicle interiors.
Since mid-2023 he has been working as a Senior Innovation Advisor for UnternehmerTUM, Europe's leading entrepreneurship center for talents, start-ups and corporates. In this function he also supports companies to take new paths to strengthen their innovative power.
Mood Ahmed is an R&D Project Manager leading the development of innovative fiber technologies for filtration applications. With a background in Textile Engineering and Material Science, Mood has extensive experience in filter design, media characterization, and performance testing. His work focuses on developing high-performance air and liquid filters. Mood holds a Master's degree in Advanced Materials and Smart Textiles from Ghent University, Belgium, and a degree in Textile Engineering. He is passionate about sustainability, smart materials, and new product development.
His presentation highlights the growing trend towards sustainable solutions in the filtration industry, emphasizing the use of bio-circular and recycled polymers, mono-material bicomponent fibers, and synthetic alternatives to reduce environmental impact and promote a more sustainable future.
Oswaldo Anaya is a Product Marketing Manager at Freudenberg Performance Materials, with responsibility for Filtration. Prior to his experience with the Nonwovens business of Freudenberg, Oswaldo held various international positions as Market Segment Management and Sales Leader at Freudenberg Sealing Technologies in the Auomotive segment. Here Oswaldo has been able to drive international Sales organizations in acquiring knowledge and understanding of the market as well as pursuing strategic goals. With over 20 years of international experience in manufacturing industries incl. Automotive, Aerospace and filtration, Oswaldo holds a Bachelor degree of Industrial Engineering from Tec de Monterrey Campus Querétaro in México.
Oswaldo will deliver a presentation on "Sustainable filtration – what is truly good for the planet".
Dr. Marina Ängeslevä is a Sales and Application Specialist at Porometer, where she helps customers find the best solution to analyse and characterise their porous filter media. Marina works particularly with pore size and pore size distribution, as well as air and liquid permeability. She has also been studying these characteristics during her PhD studies at LUT University, where she recently received a Doctoral Degree in Chemical Engineering. She has published several research papers focusing on porous media and filtration in scientific journals. Marina often presents her work at various conferences.
Dr Ängeslevä will share her insights on investigating correlations between pore size and air permeability measured with a capillary flow porometer and filtration efficiency, namely penetration and resistance, measured with an automated filter tester.
Umut Burak Dalbudak graduated from Gazi University Chemical Engineering and then had a M.Sc. degree from Istanbul University in Science of Engineering Department. After 15 years of private sector experience in technical textile industry, he decided to start their own company with his partner Prof Dr. Mehmet Akalın from Marmara University. He is focusing on innovative and sustainable products and production technologies in their company in order to develop new materials with their solution partners.
Umut will present one of the latest R&D project which is about development of a biodegradable dust filter using biodegradable PET and bicoPET mono-material with sustainable needle punching production method.
Dr. Christian Ewald is a Vice President at Freudenberg Filtration Technologies, where he leads the global market segment Gas Phase Filtration. With over 8 years of filtration experience, Christian worked extensively on filter and equipment development to improve filtration performance and sustainability but also to meet latest legal requirements. He holds a Ph.D. in Mechanical Process Engineering from Technical University of Darmstadt.
Christian will share strategies to improve filtration systems towards improved protection from harmful corrosive and odorous emissions and for ensuring a safe work environment.
Chris Griffin has a PhD in Material Science from Imperial College, London. He lives in Denver, Colorado where he has worked for Johns Manville for 22 years and has held various leadership roles in Technical and Business Management. He is currently the Director of Sustainability and Innovation, responsible for the identification and development of new business opportunities. He is also responsible for global sustainability at Johns Manville, particularly in the development of sustainability measurements and metrics and identifying improvement opportunities related to greenhouse gases, waste and energy reduction.
Chris will deliver a presentation on "Recycling and Circular Use of Waste Filters and Filtration Media".
Dr. Stephan Grosse is team leader of the marketing and sales team of Topas Gmbh and head of sales and board member of the Topas Inc. in parallel. He studied process engineering at Technische Universität Dresden with focus on particles, aerosols and cleanrooms. After that he did his PhD at Leibnitz institute of Polymerforschung Dresden e.V. focusing on particle measurements in hot melts during extrusion processing. He joined Topas in 2007 at the R&D department but became a marketing and sales person over the years. From being in intense customer contact and his contribution in multiple project committees he is actively connected to the filtration industry.
Thomas Heininger is Director Filtration Materials at MANN+HUMMEL, where he leads the Development Teams for Nonwoven and Gas Adsorption Filtration Materials. With over 14 years of experience, Thomas has worked extensively on Filter (Media) Development for various applications. He studied Process Engineering and worked in different functions in Filtration and Automotive segment.
Dr. Christof Keppler is the VP of R&D of Mativ, where he leads the R+D department for the segment “Filtration and Advanced materials”. With more than 25 years of experience in Mativ R+D, Christof has worked extensively on the development of filter media supporting customer and market needs. He holds a Ph.D in Physics from the Technical University of Munich.
Christoph will share strategies how to decrease the PCF (product carbon footprint) of automotive filter media and its impact on the performance and cost structure of those media.
Dr. Tony Lawson is the Senior Filtration Specialist working in Advanced Technology at Hengst SE based in Münster Germany. He leads initiatives on nonwoven filter media development for the Hengst Group of companies covering air and liquid filters for automotive and industrial filtration applications. With over 25 years of experience working on nonwovens for filtration applications, Anthony has developed expertise in all areas of filter media design, development and applications from fibres to filter elements. Tony holds a PhD in Polymer Chemistry from the University of Strathclyde in the UK as well as an MBA in Innovation and Knowledge Management from the Open University. Tony will discuss today how regulatory changes can be harnessed to drive innovation in media and filter element design.

Dr. Manasco is the Director of Application and Business Development for Elmarco, Inc. He received his Bachelor’s in Science in Chemical Engineering at the University of South Carolina in 2005 and his PhD in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at North Carolina State University in 2010. Prior to joining Elmarco, Dr. Manasco was a Research Engineer at Zeus Industrial Products. Dr. Manasco has extensive experience in electrospinning, polymer science, filtration and nonwovens.
Marc Schmidt Ph.D. is Vice President Technologies Europe with AAF International. He is an international air filtration professional, who graduated in Chemical Engineering at KIT, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (Germany).
His main professional activities were in the fields of product & process development, sales and technical marketing, business development and operations management in filter and nonwovens industry in Europe and China. Besides he is a Chairman of Eurovent Product Group Filters (PG-FIL). On behalf of AAF International, Marc Schmidt frequently engages himself in international consulting and training related to high-end air filtration systems in cleanroom environments. He also acts as speaker during various conferences and symposia.
Marc will deliver a presentation titled "The best is yet to come - An outlook from the filter manufacturer’s perspective".
Dorothea Slevogt is a Senior Consulting Specialist with more than 25 years of experience in the world of international market research and B2B-consulting. She holds a master’s degree in communications and an MBA in International Consulting. Dorothea travelled extensively internationally for her consulting work, where she gained many practical insights into the international supplier industry for different types of materials, and projects related to environmental positioning and customer enhancement. Much of the insights Dorothea has acquired from expert discussions and interviews in the field of technical textiles, chemicals and nonwovens in recent years.
Dorothea will share her insights into her project work regarding PFAS from current research projects carried out in the field of filtration.
Björn Strelau is Director Global Product Management for glass filtration media at Hollingsworth & Vose, where he manages H&V’s glass media product portfolio and leads the development of PlusZero™, a new product generation which doesn’t use PFAS chemicals. He holds a university degree in Management and Business Administration from Ulm University, Germany. Björn has worked in different positions in Sales and Marketing with over 15 years of experience in the filtration industry.
Björn will share insights of eliminating the use of PFAS while maintaining same filtration performance in HEPA filtration.
Dr. Cédric Vallet is Head of Product Management & Business Development of the Filtration Division at Ahlstrom. After an engineering degree in chemistry and a PhD at University of Rennes in France, he joined Ahlstrom and has occupied different positions in R&D, Sales and Marketing always in the field of Filtration. In the last 15 years, he has developed a strong expertise on filtration media manufacturing and on various air and liquid filtration applications, especially in the field of transportation.
Tobias Zimmer is an air filter specialist with more than 20 years of experience in the international ventilation industry. Since 2009 Tobias has been employed by Camfil, an industry leading air filter manufacturer based in Sweden. Tobias serves actively in numerous working groups of several international standard committees including ISO TC142 (Cleaning equipment for air and other gases), CEN TC195 (Air filters for general air cleaning), CEN TC156 (Ventilation for buildings). Tobias is the convenor of CEN TC 195/WG7 (Environmental product declarations for air cleaning equipment) as well as vice chairman of PC-FIL at Eurovent Certification and an advisory board member of the World Filtration Institute.
In his presentation titled "Upcoming EN standard on complementary product category rules (C-PCR) for environmental product declarations (EPD) for air filters", you will learn about the most important c-PCR for EPD of air filters, that will allow an evaluation based on comparable and relevant environmental data.

FILTREX™ 2022 closes after a successful edition
Around 100 filtration media professionals gathered in Berlin, Germany last week for a two-day conference on topics relating to filtration. The programme addressed issues from sustainability to testing and standardisation, as well as providing inspiring insights on future trends in the health and the automotive industries. Read more
FILTREX™ Innovation Award 2022
The 2022 FILTREX™ Innovation Award, the only award recognizing innovation in the filtration industry, was attributed by delegate’s vote to Oerlikon Nonwoven for their HycuTEC (inline charging technology).
Dr Ingo Mählmann, Vice President of Sales & Marketing, along with his colleague Ralph Berkemann, Senior Manager Application – both from Oerlikon Nonwoven – were on site to accept the prize. “This is really a great honour,” said Dr Mählmann on receiving the award. “We invested a lot of work in the development of this equipment to more efficiently produce filter media. So we are really proud as it was only released at the beginning of this year and it’s already being recognized by the industry.”
