Wet wipes always in the trash
EDANA has joined Stanpa, the Spanish Cosmetic, Toiletry and Perfurmery Association, in their #ToallitasBienTiradas campaign on how to properly dispose wet wipes. It is a sector-wide initiative that reinforces the importance of disposing of this product responsibly.
The main objective of the campaign is to protect water quality in our cities, contribute to the preservation of natural ecosystems, and minimize the impact on urban sanitation networks. Through this initiative, citizens are reminded that simple actions—such as always throwing wipes in the trash—have a direct impact on environmental health.
In Spain, people are very fond of “throwing” things—throwing compliments around, or ("throwing") a pass at someone. However, when it comes to the environment, the key is to do it properly. In this context, and coinciding with the celebration of World Nature Day, the National Association of Perfumery and Cosmetics, Stanpa, launched its new awareness campaign featuring an audiovisual advertisement. With the aim of protecting our environment, safeguarding urban water systems, and minimizing the impact on sanitation networks, the creative piece directly addresses citizens in a friendly and engaging way, reminding them that using wipes correctly means always throwing them in the trash.
The cosmetics industry has spent years positioning itself as a leading advocate for responsible and sustainable beauty. In 2019, the sector took a significant step forward by establishing new standards through the development of Standard UNE 149002, which sets acceptance criteria for products intended for disposal via the toilet. As a result, only products specifically designed for toilet disposal—such as moist toilet paper—may be flushed, provided they pass five rigorous scientific tests on disintegration and biodegradation. Everything else must be thrown in the trash. This distinction is clearly and harmoniously indicated on the labeling of all products. Following this regulation, a Code of Good Labeling Practices was introduced, specifying the correct labeling of wipes and moist toilet paper to protect the environment, supported by water management entities, public authorities, and leading manufacturers.
As a result of this agreement, the industry has updated consumer information and undergone a clear shift toward innovation, using more sustainable materials. These ongoing sector advancements underpin the current purpose of the campaign, which once again has the support of EDANA.
In this regard, Lucía Jiménez Silva, Deputy Director of Sustainability at Stanpa, states: “Since 2019, we have focused our efforts on transforming the value chain and materials to offer increasingly sustainable alternatives. Now, our challenge is to ensure that this environmental commitment continues in households, so that beyond simply using these products, citizens also dispose of them correctly.”
Clara Pi, Communications Director at Stanpa, explains: “In a context where wet wipes are part of our daily lives, it is essential to strengthen awareness about their use and responsible disposal. At Stanpa, we continue working to promote proper habits. That is why, with #ToallitasBienTiradas, we want to remind everyone that small actions by each citizen can make a big difference in protecting water, caring for our natural environment, and ensuring the proper functioning of urban infrastructure.”
